Dormer Pramet, a global manufacturer of cutting tools and a member of the Sandvik Group, operates one of its key manufacturing sites in Šumperk, Czech Republic.
With increasing pressure to improve production agility and embrace digitalization, the company recognized the need to eliminate paper-based workflows on the shop floor and replace them with a more flexible, connected, and scalable digital system.
Partnering with Axians, the customer launched a strategic initiative to eliminate paper-based workflows on the shop floor and replace them with a more flexible, connected, and scalable digital system.
Previously, much of Dormer Pramet’s manufacturing documentation was handled manually. Paper forms were used to report work progress, record tool usage, and communicate operational data. These documents were printed, filled out by hand, and then digitized or archived, resulting in delays and high administrative effort. Inconsistencies and outdated information also posed a risk to efficient production.
To support its transition toward Industry 4.0, Dormer Pramet partnered with Axians to implement a fully paperless production system. Based on SAP FRONTO, the solution extended the company’s existing SAP environment with a set of custom mobile applications tailored to shop floor operations. Axians delivered 20 integrated apps that enabled digital reporting, tool tracking, and part traceability, all running on rugged mobile devices directly at workstations.
A real-time visualization system was also deployed via large screens, allowing staff to monitor machine and order status instantly. This improved responsiveness and helped reduce downtime. Reporting became more accurate and tool management more effective, while access to current documentation helped workers avoid errors and rework.
Thanks to the direct connection to the machine control units, manual input has been reduced and we also have faster and more accurate documents. This also applies to the monitoring of special expensive tools, where a more accurate assessment of their wear can bring interesting savings”

The project established a scalable digital infrastructure for future expansion. The open architecture of SAP FRONTO allows the system to be extended to additional facilities and adapted to evolving needs. With this move, Dormer Pramet has strengthened its operational resilience and positioned itself for continued progress along its digital transformation journey.
