As transport organizations adopt more digital applications and services, their networks must handle growing traffic volumes while maintaining operational continuity and protecting sensitive information.
For one of Spain’s leading railway operators, these demands translate into a clear priority: ensuring the availability of business-critical applications and the secure exchange of information between operational sites and data centers. Since each system has distinct requirements, the network must also prioritize critical information flows and prevent disruptions from affecting operations.
To meet these needs, Axians deployed an advanced SD-WAN architecture that intelligently directs traffic across the network and optimizes communications between the operator’s sites and its primary data center. Greater automation simplifies network management while allowing available connectivity resources to be used more efficiently.
This enhanced connectivity is supported by a secure, highly available IP Fabric architecture within the data center. Together, the two technologies provide a flexible foundation for segmenting, prioritizing and protecting different types of traffic across the operator’s digital environment.
As a result, communications involving business applications, ticketing systems and corporate databases can be managed according to their specific operational and security requirements. At the same time, perimeter security systems provide an additional layer of protection for information moving across the infrastructure.
Beyond securing traffic flows, the project also strengthens control over who and what can access the network. A Network Access Control solution verifies users and devices before allowing them to connect, reducing the risk of unauthorized access and giving the operator greater visibility across its infrastructure.
Together, these capabilities improve the availability of critical applications, reinforce the protection of information flows and provide greater control over the entire communications environment. By bringing connectivity and cybersecurity together within a single architecture, the project is creating a more resilient network that can adapt to evolving operational demands and emerging security risks, while providing a stronger foundation for future digital services.
