The continued digitalization of metropolitan transport is increasing the need for reliable, secure connectivity across stations, operational environments, and other critical locations. As the number of connected endpoints, corporate services, and operational applications grows, networks must meet these demands while accommodating future systems without compromising availability, performance, or security.
These requirements are central to the technological modernization of an urban transport operator’s main lines, where Axians deployed a new communications infrastructure across its stations. The project establishes a common network foundation that supports current operations and provides room for future development.
At the heart of this infrastructure, Wi-Fi connectivity for endpoints and corporate services is combined with secure cabling for access and core network interconnection. Together, these elements create a consistent and reliable connectivity platform across the line’s stations.
The platform’s reliability also depends on the resilience and protection built into its design. High availability and cybersecurity principles have therefore shaped the architecture from the outset, strengthening communications and establishing a secure foundation for applications associated with transport operations and management.
With these safeguards in place, the operator can expand connected services while limiting the operational and cybersecurity risks that accompany a growing digital environment. The new infrastructure will also make network maintenance more efficient, helping teams manage evolving requirements across stations.
This combination of easier maintenance, stronger protection, and consistent connectivity gives the urban transport operator with a more adaptable communications environment. As new operational needs emerge, the network will provide a foundation for introducing additional digital transport services while maintaining the availability and security expected from critical infrastructure.

Rotterdam sent hyper-smart container on trip around the world
ReadContainer 42 departed from Rotterdam on a two-year data collection trip. During its journey around the world, its sensors collected intelligent data. It measured vibration levels, incline, and position, while also providing data on noise, air pollution, humidity, and temperature. The Container had solar panels which demonstrated how much energy could be harvested on container ships, trains, or trucks.
