As Paderborn University expands its teaching and research facilities, students and staff need access to the digital services that support their work. Connecting new buildings to the campus network was therefore part of a broader task: extending access while replacing aging equipment to maintain a secure, efficient network.
That network brings together everyday university services, from email and campus Wi-Fi to remote access through VPN connections. It also supports visiting academics and research partners, making connectivity essential to both daily activity and academic collaboration.
The university turned to Axians, its network partner since 2002, to support this expansion. Axians assessed port requirements and planned the Cisco routing, switching and Wi-Fi components needed to connect the new facilities and replace equipment reaching the end of its lifecycle.
Delivering that plan required close coordination. Although fiber connections to the data center were ready, hardware delivery delays presented a challenge. Advance ordering and regular communication helped address this constraint. The university’s network team then installed and configured the equipment, beginning with server rooms before connecting individual floors and spaces.
Alongside the infrastructure upgrade, Axians initiated an Enterprise License Agreement providing access to Cisco products at agreed, discounted prices for a defined period. This gave the university a clearer basis for planning its licensing expenditure as it renewed its network.
The project delivered reliable, secure connections for the new facilities while modernizing the existing infrastructure. Replacing ageing components helped maintain network efficiency and security as the campus grew.
For students, lecturers and researchers, this means connecting new teaching and research spaces into the university’s shared digital environment. The upgraded network provides the connectivity on which access to resources, communication and academic collaboration depend, helping the university extend these activities across its expanding campus.
